"mornings on 2" starts right now. good morning. thank you for waking up with us. you are looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. next week at this time, it will be closed. the new span will be less than 24 hours away from opening. we'll have more on that pending closure in moments. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm pam cook in for tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic for you. we're going first to steve paulson. >> a lot of drizzle. peninsula, san francisco, southern marin county. it's all helped along by a system kind of skirting by in the atmosphere right there. that squeezes out some of that fog and drizzle. the water temperatures are warm. 58 to 65. cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. 60 to 78. partly sunny, partly cloudy by

noon. we'll have mostly sunny -- there will be a little fog. 60s 70s, and 80s. 64, san jose. livermore, 64. santa rosa, 59. san rafael, san francisco, 60. same for redwood city, concord, antioch. back-to-school forecast, alameda going back. starting off cloudy skies, 62. we'll go 65, then a high today of 70 degrees under mostly sunny skies. a lot of tropical clouds giving tremendous amounts of rain in southern california and las vegas. will it make it to the rim fire? we'll talk about that in 15 minutes. a little cooler today, mild, muggy. clouds, then sun. the morning drizzle will give way to cloudy skies and then some sun. sal has an update on some of the wet roads. that's right. things are getting belter, steve, as we get later into the morning. but at the toll plaza, in san francisco, in some plaxes we still have some -- places, we still have slick roads, deally city, the peninsula on highway 1. you might see some wet roads

there. please give yourself extra time. the morning commute is slow at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's backed up for about a 15 to 20-minute delay as you drive through there. no major problems, by the way, at the bay bridge toll plaza. i want to show you the traffic on the commute in the bay area. there's lot of red on 880. you can see that traffic is especially slow from 238 as you head down through hayward. 7:03. let's go back to the desk. >> okay. thank you, sal. topping our news -- the countdown clock is ticking. we're in the final few days to the closure of the bay bridge. caltrans will shut it down to make way for the new eastern span next week. tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: cyclists and pedestrians will have their own

pathways. those are set to open on tuesday. be forewarned. the bike lanes will go part way only until crews demolish the old bridge and complete that yerba buena connection and that won't be until 2015. folks are very excited here about the fact that after 11 years of construction and $6.4 billion in tax payer money, the new bridge will finally open. wednesday night at 8:00, crews are shutting down the bridge while they realign the 880 with thier baba wayne na island, they will be paving and striping lanes. we spoke to one lane working on the bridge. >> overall, it will be better. >> reporter: looking pregty -- pretty good? >> yeah. the bridge looks nice, nice and smooth. it's pretty. other than the eyesore that -- there will be an eyesore in that zone. >> reporter: traffic will be a nightmare for the next week.

ferries are extending service. b.a.r.t. is adding limited service through sunday night. a number of events are scheduled over this holiday weekend, including as games, a cal football game and the sausalito arts festival. the new bay bridge is set 0 tone back to work on labor day weekend. the -- the chp will by ginn traffic breaks. and coming up, we'll tell you when the old bridge will be completely down and why it's considered a pretty dangerous business. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we have a special section on our ktvu website to help you get around while the bay bridge is closed. you can find it under hot topics under ktvu.com. more coverage of that big firefight, the one that's happening all over california. right now, more than 8300 firefighters are battling almost 400 square miles of fires. six of the wildfires burned over the weekend. as of last night, firefighters

contained, two of them. the rim fire, the big one burning near yosemite park. it's the largest. as of this morning, the rim fire has destroyed almost 144,000 acres. it's only 7% contained. almost 3500 firefighters are out there. 23 buildings have been lost. it's not clear how many are homes. coming up in the next half however, ktvu's alex savidge will tell us about a local camp that was burned up in that fire. new this morning -- police in san francisco are looking for the suspect in an overnight stabbing that sent one person to the hospital. it happened on mission near ruth street in the mission terrace neighborhood at 1:30 this morning. now the victim was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition. right now, it's unclear what led up to that stabbing. two young girls are among the four people shot in a day- time shooting in east oakland. it happened yesterday afternoon

on 104th. police say the two little girls, age 8 and 12, were wounded along with a man and a woman. no one else was seriously hurt. ktvu news spoke to one officer gunfire. >> our immediate concern is public safety. if there's any more victims, we want to make sure everyone is safe. >> still no word on what led up to the shooting. but still are still looking for suspects. the two children in yesterday's shooting are expected to survive. but several children have died in the recent gun violence in oakland. on august 7th, 1-year-old true jackson was killed after someone shot through the walls where he was sleeping. his father was killed. and last month an 8-year-old girl was shot and killed during a shum berparty when someone sprayed the building with bifer. three others -- with gunfire. three others were shot in 2011.

police say 43-year-old eric sanchez threatened a store employee by saying he had a contagious disease. he stole several pieces of jewelry before fleeing on his bike. police found him and fortunately nobody was hurt. the snake scammers in alameda county may have struck again. ktvu's janine de la vega tells us these suspects distract victims to get what they want. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. i just spoke with one neighbor who told me there have been several burglaries in the neighborhood. this is a first one where someone is mosing as an animal service officer. police actually knocked on that neighbor's door to warn him. on saturday at around 5:00 p.m., fremont police say that a woman who disguised herself as an animal service employee came to a home on moore drive

telling the resident that a poisonous snake was on the loose and had bitten someone. he said everyone had to leave the house so measurements could be taken. officers say a second suspect went in the house and stole jewelry. another home was hit and in that incident, a homeowner was sold two snakes were on the loose and they needed to get in the house. we spoke to a resident and asked him if he would be tricked, if is what he would say. >> i would like to think i wouldn't fall for it. >> i have many people knocking on my door selling all sorts of stuff. i would like to believe i wouldn't. but it's always possible. >> reporter: police describe one of the suspects as being a white or latino female, 5 feet tall with a medium blild. she was wearing a hat, dark- colored gloves and a tan or brown button downed shirt with

ty carter will become the fifth living american recipient for his war in iraq and afghanistan. he saved the lives of sold yerd in 2009. eight u.s. soldiers were killed. 22 others were injured. another survivor received the medal of hobber in february. receiving this award effectively makes him undeployable and he wants to continue his service working with wounded warriors.

problem for the past couple of years. we'll have new information coming up. over the weekend a memorial was held for a australian baseball player killed in oklahoma. hundreds gathered in melbourne, australia, that's the hometown of christopher lane. he was shot and killed last week as he was jogging. three teenagers have been arrested in the case. police say the teenagers were bored and had nothing better to do. a new bike share program will soon be hitting bay area streets. we want to show you some of the bike racks located in san francisco. many more can be found in redwood city, palo alto, mountain view and san jose. the program launches this thursday and an an url membership costs $88. that gives you an unlimited number of rides. so far 700 bikes are available at the 70 pickup and dropoff locations. time about 7:15. hey, sal, the weather, fog and mist out there, causing any

problems. >> it was a little wet. >> okay. >> things are drying off a little bit. steve and i are on the same page. let's go out and take a look at some of the livermore valley commute. a little bit of red on the map and you know red means slow and stop and e traffic is actually slow to dublin, then it gets better after you past the dublin interchange. if you get out to the hayward area, you will still see traffic here especially here all the way down to union city. then it gets better, it's doing very well. if you are driving on the peninsula, the traffic is moving along pretty well except for this area here, that would be 101/92. slow traffic especially on 101 heading south through the area. let's to live pictures. the traffic at the toll plaza is backed up for a 20-minute delay. it will be interesting to see once they open up the east span

whether it will have an effect on the bay bridge toll plaza delays in the mornings. northbound 101 here, approach, the 80 split. that traffic looks good. at 7:16. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a lot of report, this morning from san mateo, peninsula, san carlos, belmont hills to san francisco, over at oakland and berkeley. not reports of drizzle. few locations say it's light rain. if you want to call it light rain, that's okay with me. it's helped along. once that goes through. a little bit back -- starting off 60. kind of mild. 75. we'll go for a high of 82. 64, livermore. 60 fairfield. a lot of upper 50s but a lot more 60s here including mild temperatures. sea surface temperatures between 65 and 60. mild conditions. that's giving the fog bank help. the cloud cover to the southern california area and also

southern nevada. associated with clouds, the key is will make it all the way to the rim fire. and that's more often than not. so far it's saying south. there is a lot of moisture. the cloud/rain takes some of it north. we'll keep track on it. but they could use the rain. don't want the lightning. the wind is mainly out of the west. you need that to be more out of the south. maybe this will turn later on. i think it will be south. 60 sacramento. 67 fresno. even cooler down on the desert because of all of that cloud cover. a little low spinning to the north. we're starting off with a lot of cloud cover and that drizzle will give way. down to about 3, 4 degrees. 60s and 70s. for others light rain or drizzle and then temperatures will rebound a little bit

two amazing ways to score. welcome back. there is a growing trend that could affect the safety of california roads. according from the latest numbers from the dmv, there are more older drivers and fewer teenagers behind the wheel. researchers pay special acloaks to these groups because they are the most likely to cause an accident. in total drivers over the age

of 85 cause the -- caused the most accident. and over the last ten years, the number of drivers on the road has jumped 25%. a controversial win in sonoma. take a look. scott dixon who led a good chunk of the race, clipped another crew team member there. the man went flying. luckily, only has a twisted ankle. dixon said the man did it on purpose. he was hit with a penalty sending him from second place down to 15th place. will power ended up taking the checkered flag for his third win at sonoma. some 49er fans pumped up for the regular nfl season that began. some got so excited they had to call in extra police at last night agame. >> ut-ho. >> you got the wave going on. you got a couple of fans coming out. >> i'm not kidding you. three rowdy fans tried to run onto the field during the 4th

quarter during the vehiclings. one fan was successful. that forced the 49ers security teams to bring in bike cops to help inside. during the game, kaepernick got the game off to a fast-- off to a fast start and he danced in the end zone. the 9ers extended their lead in the second. hawkins got this kickoff and took it 105 yards for a touchdown. 49ers went on to win, final score, 34-14. in the meantime, the oakland raiders getting ready for their preseason finale. this is one last chance for prior to win the starting quarterback job. matt flynn won't play in thursday's game. those two have been in a tight

competition for the starting job since training camp. there may be relief at the pump for drivers. latest survey shows that gas prices continue to fall. the average price for a gallon has dropped 4 cents over the past few weeks. it's down 20 cents compared to the same time last year. here's a look at where we stand in the bay area. the average cost is $3.90. in oakland, drivers are paying $3.77 a gallon. drivers are paying an average of 3.76 a gallon to fill up. plastic containers may soon become a thing of the past. the city council is expected to vote on the proposal tomorrow. many residents and -- restaurants say foam takeout boxes are recyclable. most containers end up in the landfill. if the ban passes, they would need to use alternatives by 2014. small neighborhood restaurants

would have until 2015. 7:24. supporters of hangar one in mountain view are putting pressure on the navy to pay to maintain a protective coating on the historic structure. the siding on the hangar located on moffett field was removed last year because of contamination. the coating was applied to the sceel -- skeleton. the cost is estimated over three years. in a proposal released the navy suggested that nasa which operates moffett field should pay. but nasa said it never agreed to pay to maintain the hangar. new plans for the new stadium, behind schedule. documents show the repair costs have gone up as much as $50

loss. alex? >> reporter: it's a big loss. a lot of people say they are just heartbroken this morning. they have a lot of special members of the berkeley tuolumne family camp. this is a place where families have been enjoying the outdoors for generations. it was heavily damaged over the weekend. i'm trying to reach the camp's director, have not heard back. the camp is swaled here near groveland and not far from yosemite -- situated here near groveland and not far from yosemite. this suffered heavy damage as the rim fire moved through over the weekend. the rim fire moved through last week, the popular had to be evacuated. yesterday, flames spread to the camp and destroyed much of the facility. the u.s. forest service still unsure how many buildings at the camp were lost. close to 3500 firefighters continue to battle the flames,

on the ground and in the air trying to slow the spread of this massive fire. thick smoke is blank kelled in the area. firefighters are warning people with breathing problems and heart problems to stay away. the fire is still threatening thousands of homes. over the weekend, some people in groveland were allowed back home and they were grateful to fire crews. they've gotta know that -- what they did saved our homes. >> we're so grateful for all of the firefighters we're just so appreciative. >> reporter: there's several other bay area camps near yosemite also being threatened by the rim fire, including the camp run by uc berkeley, san francisco's camp mezar and snra's family camp and also -- san jose's familiar camp and

camp torongo. looking on twitter and facebook, a lot of people talking about attending summer camp here, and people say they plan to donate time and money to help the camp rebuild. live in berkeley, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. we want to show you video of the fire shot from a california air national guard air tanker. you can see a massive size of this fire. the type of plane they are in can drop 3,000 gallons of water in five seconds. this unit helping fight the fire is a 136th airlift wing. it has a dozen helicopters that can perform airdrops as well. as it grows in size, that rim fire is edging closer to hetch hetchy reservoir. despite ash falling on the reservoir and thick smoke in the area, utility workers say the water quality is still good. you can find more photos of the

fire at ktvu.com. look for the slide show under top stories. that's right on our home page. 7:34. police in walnut creek are searching for two gunmen who robbed a downtown restaurant over the weekend. it happened saturday night at corners tavern in walnut creek. witnesses say two gunmen came through the back door wearing hoodies and bannan das -- bandanas. customers never knew what happened. one waitress said it was like something out of a movie. >> i want to see them caught and stop and -- i -- i just don't want this to happen to anybody else. >> walnut creek police showed us this surveillance video. this suv, leaving the garage. another, maybe the same vehicle, from a different angle. now, police say the suv, they are searching for is a light- colored vehicle. it has a roof rack. no one was hurt in that holdup. we also have more details on of

the recent robbery of tiffany's in downtown walnut creek. thieves robbed a pickup truck through the front door of tiffany's. police say the suspects stole jewelry from a display case. but they couldn't steal the more expensive items. so far, no arrests have been made. in 90 minute -- in 90 minutes, a man accused of stealing baggage from united airlines' passengers is due in court shortly after the asiana jet crash. his wife faces similar charges. they are reported to have stolen baggage from passengers. the victims' luggage arrived at sfo before they did. in the next few weeks, san francisco police officers will begin to wear chest cameras. the cameras will be warn by

serving search warrants. chief greg suhr says the cameras are there to ensure they are following correct procedure. well, it's an exciting, sometimes nervous time for kids heading back to school. today, it's the first day for the oakland school district. brian flores joining us live at roosevelt middle school in oakland with some advice from the police on how to keep kids safe. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, dave. roosevelt middle school opens here about an hour from now. exciting day, as you mentioned, oakland police september out advice for kids and parents as they head back to school. i want to bring up a things. they say for your kids to map out a safe route.

they say that's important for your kids, avoid vacant lots, alleyways and construction zones and houses, places where your kids can be safe if there is an emergency outside of home. to talk more about safety and the first day of school, i'm here with principal hong. we talk about safety here and throughout the district as well, what are you communicating to parents out there to be aware of? >> well, safety is number one, safety first. and -- in terms of communication, that very thing is what we talk to parents about. make sure we're communicating. anything out of the ordinary, let us know. if we see anything, we'll send out notices. but overall, it's been very safe the last couple of years here. we're feeling really good and smooth going into the first day. >> reporter: a lot of peer pressure, even more bullying from what we're hearing. what are you telling parents and kids about bullying, about

how to report that? >> so, first of all, we're really excited about the bullying situation in oakland unify fid because -- unified because we launched a new program. and we've talked a lot about that over the last year. one of the things we're doing that's new we're communicating to parents that there's a report form that they can complete and turn into school officials if they heard that their child is being bull littled and then -- being bullied and then school officials will respond. >> reporter: in terms of this first week, first week, will there be extra security on campus to keep things okay? >> i don't think so. we're feeling like the system put in place will ensure safety. we'll have the same amount of safe that we'll have the whole year. >> we're feeling good. >> sounds good. hope you have a great year. >> safety is the number one person for the oakland police department. if you are a parent out there. if you are a kid watching, be safe out there. have a good year.

get better. if you are driving southbound on 880, that's pretty slow. we're getting word of a new b.a.r.t. delay and have that for you the next time. we're counting down to the closure of the bay bridge. caltrans will shut down the bay bridge wednesday night making way for the new eastern span for next week. tara moriarty is joining us live at the toll plaza. she's gonna tell us how out with the old may almost be as challenging as in with the new. >> reporter: that's right. as far as the old bridge is concerned. crews are -- it could take them up to three years to get rid of it. they are gonna have to dismantle it, piece by piece and that's because if they don't, exactly the way that it was erected that bridge could potentially collapse and kill workers and dump toxic material into the bay. now right now, of course, the big news is the new bridge and

when that will be happen opening. wednesday night at 7:00ing they will start the traffic rollbacks. that's when crews are gonna be closing the bridge at both ends. by 8:00 so that they can realign interstate 80 with the new bridge as well as at yerba buena island. they will be pafning, installing -- paving installing barrier rails. this morning we spoke to one man working on the bridge. he's excited after 11 years of construction and $6.4 billion worth of tax payer money. >> it will be worth the wait. there's so much that needs to be done just to transition over to the new bridge that there's no way they can do it like in the nighttime. >> traffic will be a nightmare for the next week. so ferries are extending service. b.a.r.t. is adding service through sunday. a number of big events are scheduled over the holiday weekend. the new bay bridge is set to open the day after labor day at

bying snakes are -- by saying snakes are in their home. janine de la vega has been talking to people in the area and getting their reaction. janine? >> reporter: yeah, pam. it's upsetting to people who live here. they are part of a neighborhood crime watch group and the organizer of that sent out an e- mail to everybody who lived here to warn them to be on alert. now, on saturday, at around 5:00 a.m., fremont police say that a woman who disguised herself as an animal services employee came to a home on moore drive telling residents a poisonous snake bit a girl on the street and was on the loose. she said that everybody had to leave the home and measurements needed to be taken. that's when a man went into the home and stole items and jewelry. and then on niles, in another incident, two females said poisonous snakes were on the loose and they needed to get in the home and yard to measure

burning near yosemite park is by far the largest. about 15 minutes ago, we learned that the rim fire has burned 149,000 acres. reporter dominic is in tuolumne city. and that's where the firefighters are focusing their efforts today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i guess you can start calling this the battle for tuolumne city. there's about 2,000 firefighters brought from to defend this town -- brought in to defend this town. we had a run for the fire at 6:00 last night. actually, earlier. firefighters were dispatched to take it out. looking from the smoke filling the city off to the east of me, it looks like we're getting another run. i can smell the smoke. the town is a ghost town, even though the evacuation order is only an advisory at the moment, a lot of people have moved on

and you just know people we were talking say, look, this is less than half a mile from the flames. we're seeing the retardant bebeing brought by the flames -- being brought by -- being dropped down. they've built some very intense bulldozer lines and containment areas. the problem, the 40-mile-an- hour winds that take the trees straight up into an inferno and the flames that come off the trees, they can easily jump the containment lines. that's the biggest risk to the 1600 homes that we have here in tuolumne, pam. >> all right. dominic, thank you so much for that update. a horrendous story. we have more photos on our website of this fire. ktvu.com. more information about the containment, the firefighting efforts there. look for the slide showed up the top story tab on our home page.

>> an incredible story. let's get you to where you need to go. sal, the toll plaza, how is it doing. >> it will be slowed. we found a stalled vehicle. they removed it. but traffic was pretty slow for a while. it seems to be loosening up a little bit. you will see some slow traffic definitely at the toll plaza still. you are also going to see some slow traffic on interstate 880 getting up north. it's been a pretty slow commute as you drive through up to the brick wall. that's when it finally gets better. let me show you the livermore valley. we have a new crash westbound 580 and 680 and there is an oil slick. the oil slick is right -- right here. this is right in the area. traffic is dublin and livermore will be slow. this is 238 at 880 and in the south bay, the traffic is going to be okay.

for most part on the freeways. we have a minor b.a.r.t. delay reported on the fremont line. but no delays on caltrain and muni. a very good morning. a very cloudy morning for most. there are a couple of areas that -- most of these low clouds and a lot of reports of drizzle. ocean temperatures are up from 56 to 60. it's tough to get very cool when we don't get the upwelling. the water temperatures are warm. a lot of moisture in the air. a lot of humidity. southwest 20 at fairfield. a little sign of a cooler pattern. also more of a westerly breeze in place for many locations. a low cloud deck. it kind of lifted a little bit. a weak system came in. this also gave us some of the moisture. the key here is because -- sometimes you need mother nature to help the firefighters. it's really close. heavy-duty rain in southern california. a lot of moisture coming up. i think today it won't happen but maybe in the week certainly

ktvu's alex savidge is here now just talked a former camp counselor about the loss of the camp. >> it's a difficult morning for him. people connected to this camp are deeply saddened by the news. a lot of bay area families have very fond memories of the tuolumne camp. barely fike, he's an elementary schoolteacher here in berkeley. he's also a former counselor at the camp. he worked there back in the 1970s. he also told me his two kids spent many of their summers at the camp as well. fike said he was simply heartbroken when he heard that camp tuolumne burned yesterday. the camp is on hardened flat road, not far from yosemite national park. the city of berkeley has operated the camp since 1922. as the rim fire closed in, the popular camp did have to be evacuated. and then yesterday, flames spread to the camp and des snroid much -- destroyed much

of the facility. the fire burned many of the beautiful trees that many people say make it such a magical place. it's very sad. it's a -- it's a very sad day for berkeley. very sad day for our community. we're all just really at a loss right now. a loss for words in many ways. now this morning, i've reached out to the camp directors but i've not heard back to try to understand the extent of the damage that was done there to the facility. people who have enjoyed the camp, camp tuolumne are promising to help rebuild the place, they build a strong bond with the camp. it does seem though it will be quite sometime before the camp is back to the way it was before. in the meantime a lot of bay area kids are missing out on what is a unique experience. >> we want to show you video of camera of a taker flying over the rim fire. now the plane -- you can see

it happened on mission near ruth street in the mission terrace neighborhood at 1:30 this morning. now, the victim was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition. right now it's unclear what led up to the stabbing. two young girls are among the four people shot in a day time shooting in east oakland. it happened yesterday afternoon on 104th avenue. police say the two little girls ages 8 and 12 were wounded along with a man and a woman no one was seriously hurt but this latest shooting involving children is fueling fears that no one is safe from the gun violence in oakland. however, community leaders are still hopeful that the city will find a way to end the cycle of violence. >> there have been a lot of problems, jim crow certainly felt insurmountable, segregation felt insurmountable and it wasn't.

it took people putting themselves in harm's way to do the work that needed to be done. >> police are still looking for the suspects. two children are expected to survive. on august 7th, 1-year-old drew jackson was killed after someone shot through the walls in the house where he was sleeping. his father was also killed. last month, 8-year-old alasha carradine was shot and killed during a slumber building when someone sprayed the outside of the building with gunfire. and three others were shot in 2011. we're hearing about a mountain lie be sighting in redwood city near far creek way in the emerald hills neighborhood. residents are being warned avoid jogging or hiking at dawn, dusk and at night. that's obviously when mountain lions are most active. two neurosurgeons from uc davis resigned over a controversy.

the california woman kkded of murdering her ex-boyfriend in arizona will face a judge this morning. 38-year-old jodi arias was convicted of first-degree murder in may but has not been sentenced. the first jury could not agree on a penalty. today could be the day for the resnnsing of her -- resensing of her -- resentencing -- resnengzing phase. that jury could decide whether she gets life in prison or not. we still have the sig-alert westbound 580 right at the dublin interchange. this crash has made it for a tough commute in the area. i want to let you know that we're not any closer to getting this out of there. still have a lot of slow traffic coming through from the livermore area. this is a late commute because of that crash. westbound 580 and 680.
